Happy New Years Everybody.
And what a year it was. It started off with what was supposed to be a good year at Sony Online Entertainment. We came off the latest expansion and talk around the campfire was that everything financially with the company was looking up. Then in the first week in February, the deal went down with this hedge fund company buying SOE out, and I was instantly out of a job. I have to say that was a pretty big kick in the teeth, especially after putting 10 years into the place but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Then Retro Assault ran into delays heading into summer which was incredibly frustrating of course, ending up forcing us into Bankruptcy. We held out as long as we could, but reaching the end of severance and savings, that was basically the end of the road for us and I didn’t have any moves at that point. I had to make a decision I have never had to make before, which was fight to stay in the area. Usually I just grab the next gig that comes along which usually means relocating. I never had a problem with that in the past, but this time I have a family to consider, a house we purchased, Shannie has a rock solid job, the Kids are in a good school with friends, and Shannie’s family all live in the area here, etc. So this was really the only option unfortunately.
We made it out the other side as of this month, so things on that front are settled now but the whole process was pretty debilitating. It definitely puts things into perspective, or as James St. Hubbard from Spinal Tap says.”Maybe a little too much fucking perspective”..lol. I went from having perfect credit, to pretty much the worst over night and picking up the pieces will take a long while. So hopefully 2016 will be a little better. At this point I just want to get back to work and moving forward again.
2015 wasn’t all bad.
We made some inroads with Microsoft to bring Retro Assault to the XBOX One console which was exciting. Retro Assault on iOS is pretty close to being out the door. Still a lot of work left but I think we’re getting close as long as everybody stays focused. I think it will be a March 1st launch for that, then XBOX and Android sometime after.
The Kids are good. Maya is growing up so fast, talking and running around. Korben is getting big! Both kiddos are doing really well, happy and healthy.
With everything going on, all of this stuff of course has been really stressful for Shannie, plus she’s going through a bit of a shakeup at her work after they moved into the new building on campus. Things have been a little better for her as of late, so that’s been a little uplifting. We had to get rid of the Mini-Van, but we ended getting a Volvo Station wagon she really loves that we own outright, so no car payments…yeay!
The Plan for 2016
It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t throw up a bunch of lofty goals for the New Year! So here are my resolutions for 16′
Back to work locally
Well, first thing is getting our financial situation stabilized. I’ve been refocusing my portfolio site and refining it a little more. Now that Retro Assault is nearing completion, I’ll have a little more time for some new portfolio pieces. I need to get back to work with a local company, a stable gig with a stable paycheck.
Continue with Big SHiny Games
Big SHiny Games will release Retro Assault and we’ll see where it all goes from there. I just like creating stuff. I like the partners I’m working with, so we’ll continue the effort. This was a side gig when I was working, so I’m fine with it going back to a side gig at this point.
2016 needs to be focused on my health. The stress over the summer was pretty brutal on me. I’m starting to rebound now, but I need to get back in shape, get more sleep, eat better, the whole shabang-a-bang. This all begins tomorrow.
Music – New Diggler Doom Machine Release
I want to get another Guitar Oriented release out the door this year; Write and record at least a 4 song EP, Video and support the original Doom Machine tunes to have enough material to put together a gigging band with. I’m hoping to be gigging in town with it sometime in summer. It would be great to be playing out again, to be a solo artist again.
Film – Short Film Projects
Pretty low on the radar, but I want to get back to shooting here eventually. I have not shot a film since 2012, Prey being my last real production. I’ve been writing a lot, and some pre-production efforts on a few different projects in the works, but I want to get something shot this year. I also want to finish the outline, and dig into the script for a SATURN 3 Remake I’ve had on the burner for a few years now, and get some concept art put together for it. My intension is to get the first draft for this and pitch to a Warner Brothers contact I have towards the end of the year.
Animation and Concept Work
I’ll be continue my efforts in building up my skills in these areas. For a while now I have been focused on 3d Environment work given my position at SOE for that last 10 years and Animation in particular has taken a back seat for a while now. I want to start building a new portfolio in these directions. I want to get back into more traditional media as well, build a small art studio in the garage so I can get really messy…lol.
Expanding my knowledge and building a fun themed portfolio; cinematic, whimsical, hybrid composite paint-overs, just cool content I can create a coffee table book with along the way.
Getting the Homestead back to normal
So that’s really the main New Year’s Resolution-type thingies I want to focus on for 2016. Well that and just being a good Dad and Husband. I am looking very much forward to getting thing back to normal on the home front. 2015 has been a pretty stressful bitch of a year, and 2016 out of the gate is going to be challenging for sure, but I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to overcome and have a prosperous 16′. I wish everyone a good one as well – Cheers Mates!
Happy New Years!
